Except where indicated, activities must be accomplished between July 1, 2019 and March 30, 2020. Complete Club Celebration Citation online by midnight, March 31, 2020.

100,000 Meals on May 4

April 10, 2019 by Rotary District 6920

Rotary District 6920 Seeking the Public’s help in Packing 100,000 Meals on May 4

(SOUTHEAST GA) Rotary District 6920 will host a 100,000 Meals Packing Event on Saturday, May 4, as part of the Rotary partnership with Rise Against Hunger. During this event, participants will assemble exactly 100,008 meals in only two hours. All meals packed at the event will be sent to countries that are in crisis survival mode around the globe. The event will take place at the Jekyll Island Convention Center, located at 75 Beachview Drive N., Jekyll Island, Ga.

This will mark the first year District 6920 has hosted a 100,000 Meals Packing Event, joining initiatives with Rotary Zones 33 and 34, which span from Pennsylvania into the Caribbean, to provide 10 million meals for each District within the next two years.

Rise Against Hunger was founded in 1998 with the mission of ending hunger worldwide by providing nourishing and nutritious meals to struggling communities and disaster relief efforts. Rise Against Hunger partners with groups across the country to organize volunteer-based meal packing events, and coordinates the distribution of these meals among a global network of partners.

Each meal package consists of soy powder, rice, vegetable powder and a vitamin sachet packed with 23 essential vitamins and minerals, all of which can be boiled to feed a full family.

At the Nov., 2018 District Zone meeting in Norfolk, Va., the 400 attendees achieved the same goal of 100,008 meals in two hours. Rise Against Hunger tracked these meals to Madagascar, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.

“These are places that are in desperate need of help,” said incoming District Governor 2019-20 Mike Muldowney. “Packing these meals is such an easy thing to do, and it is so rewarding to see exactly where your efforts are going.”

District 6920 is already working to provide many meals by supporting food banks, soup kitchens, Thanksgiving and Christmas basket packing, BackPack Buddies for school children and various other hunger-ending initiatives through the District.

The event will take place as part of the 2019 All Clubs District Convention, but both conference attendees and members of the public are welcome to pack meals. Participation requires only (1) watching the 10-minute safety video, (2) signing release waivers and (3) wearing a hair net, provided at the event. The meals packing will take place from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Sponsorship and funding for this event and all meal supplies are provided by Rotary District 6290.

Individuals wishing to participate can find the safety video and online release forms here: http://events.riseagainsthunger.org/RIDistrict6920May2019

The All Clubs District Convention is open to Rotary members, their families and the public. In addition to the 100,000 Meals Packing Event, the three-day convention will feature beach time, exciting speakers, a Kentucky Derby Gala complete with hat and bowtie contests, silent auctions, Margarita Night with a Mariachi Band, buffet meals, awards, workshops and the opportunity to build friendships across Southeast Georgia.
