The Jekyll Island Rotary Club was recently honored to host two Jekyll residents with remarkable ties to naval history. Bruce Corbett, a former crew member of the USS Southwind, and Marv Alexander, the first person to land a helicopter on a nuclear-powered vessel—the Nautilus submarine—shared their extraordinary experiences. Marv also recounted his rare adventures flying helicopters to both Scott and Shackleton’s historic cabins in Antarctica. Pictured are Corbett, Club President Al Tate, Alexander, and Alexander’s children Kathy, Susan Magg, and Walter.
